Retreating to the closet made me feel like I was invisible to the world. Focused on survival, those moments were the only times I felt safe. In the closet, I could let all the pain surface, hot tears running down my face, while my body would tremble within silent sobs of hurt and agony. Somehow, in those dark, depressing hours in that closet, in between trying to protect my mom, I learned to pray.
Years later, the issues I had been dealing with as a child were resurfacing as an adult. My bouts of depression were becoming more frequent, and my husband and I had hit a hard patch in our marriage.
