Shipwrecks Shipwrecks and the rocky coast of Maine are almost synonymous. Thousands of ships, and their crews, have met their end in the icy cold waters of the Maine coast. We have listed hundred of shipwrecks from Kittery to Quoddy Light and tell the stories of many. It is therefore quite natural to expect a book titled “Shipwrecks on the Maine Coast.” It is less likely however, to see a title such as “Pirates and Treasure in Maine.” It is not usual to associate pirates with Maine – pirates were in the warm Caribbean – not in the foggy, cold waters of Maine – or were they? We have chronicled for you the many pirates, famous and not so famous, that have plied the coast of Maine for centuries. Who were the pirates of Maine? Why were they here? What might they have left behind, and why? Treasure Tales of where the pirates have buried their loot and places where some of it has been found are told in these pages. Has all the treasure been found? Gold, Silver and Jewels were not only buried by pirates but by merchants, farmers and others all over Maine. Why? – Because banks and other institutions were either not available, or not trusted.
