Two pre-teen girls, Velma and Kelly, begin their summer break with a trail walk. They are startled by the sudden appearance of a strange, running/flying bird. The girls are mesmerized by the zany movements of this unique bird; they later decide to bicycle to their local public library to try to identify it. Kay Haynes Lottinger has more than thirty years of experience as an educator: elementary classroom teacher, physical education teacher, counselor (at all levels), and elementary school principal; she values the enriching power of nature in the lives of children.
